Julie Lee is a Korean-American artist from the Muscogee and Shawnee land (so-called “Birmingham, Alabama”) working primarily in photography and collage and residing in Osage and Shawnee land (so-called “Pittsburgh, PA). Their lens-based works explore themes of ancestry, care, and the photograph as existential affirmation. They explore these themes through the family album, specifically in the matrilineal heritage that comes with them and the women around them. They hope for their work to speculate, encourage new ways of seeing and being seen, conjuring historical, psychological reconstructions of the sisterhood around them.
